Students Publish While Still Enrolled in San Antonio College's Journalism and Mass Communication Program
SAN ANTONIO, Texas: Students in San Antonio College's Journalism and Mass Communication program publish real work on real channels while they are still enrolled, according to the program's own published course descriptions.
Core production courses in the program, including News Photo 1, Video Production, Media Writing, and Radio/Television News, each state that student work is published on SAC Student Media Online as part of the coursework itself, not after graduation. Students also learn to operate the program's own channels, an online newspaper, a radio news program, and a television station, alongside social media campaigns, building a portfolio of published work before they transfer. The program is housed in Public Policy and Student Development within the Creative and Communication Arts institute at the Pre Majors/Transfer level, and its first named course for new students is COMM 1307, Introduction to Mass Communication. Nine transfer degree pathways lead to four named universities, Angelo State University, Texas A&M University Kingsville, Texas A&M University San Antonio, and The University of Texas at San Antonio, and the program also offers a Multimedia Journalist Level II Certificate.
In July 2023, San Antonio College announced that its journalism program had merged with the college's radio, television, and film department to broaden the range of skills available to students.
"We are building on the long history of award winning journalism at SAC by accessing the outstanding faculty, equipment and facilities of the RTF department," said Jim Dalglish, SAC's journalism coordinator, at the time of that 2023 announcement.
San Antonio College is one of five colleges in the Alamo Colleges District, serving the Bexar County community through courses and two year degrees. The college's journalism and photojournalism program carries a 95 year tradition of student publications, as stated on its current program page.
